The Department of Botany was established in 1957 to teach only I. A. course under the leadership of Dr. Dinen Kr. Mitra, and Mrs. Elizabeth Ukkuru. After retirement of Dr. Mitra, Dr. Ira Ghosh joined this department in 1973. When Mrs. Ukkuru left the college well before her retirement, Smt. Chitra Ghosh joined this department during 1975, who was an Ishan Scholar of the University of Calcutta and worked for her Ph.D. under famous Nobel Laureate Barbara Mc Clintok at Cold Spring Harbour Laboratory and Carnegie Institute of Washington USA for several years.
Honours course in Botany was introduced in the academic session 1981 with only 08 students. To meet the growing demand of the subject, the number of seats increased from 08 to 18 and presently to 30. Many students of this department have qualified the NET, SET examinations and are engaged in doctoral, post-doctoral programme and many other professions including teaching, research, Indian Forest Service (IFS) etc.
The department launched its Post Graduate course in distance mode (under affiliation of V.U.) during 2008-09 and continued successfully till 2020. Afterwards in 2014, our department launched two-year regular M.Sc. course (under affiliation of University of Calcutta) with 22 students and is running smoothly till date.
We have 2 equipped audio-visual system-based lecture theatres, 4 equipped laboratories for special /optional papers in P.G. department of Botany. To name a few, our department is equipped with PCR, fluorescence microscope, high speed cold centrifuge, UV-VIS spectrophotometer etc. which are necessary for teaching P.G. courses. Our central library and seminar library housed a wealth of information on different subjects of Botany as well as encyclopedia on a variety of topics. The Digital archive of P. G. department also has a good collection of e-books, CD-ROMs, online journal like Springer Online, Science Direct etc.
