Established in 1932, this department is one of the oldest in our country to offer the undergraduate course of geology to female students. An uncompromising emphasis in both teaching and research and illustrious academic and industrial careers of our alumnae have earned for this department a high repute in the geological fraternity in India and abroad.
Some salient features of this department are highlighted below.
The department consists of six faculty members with expertise in paleontology, sedimentology, ore mineralogy, environmental geology, structural geology, hydrogeology, metamorphic petrology, mineral sciences, global tectonics, igneous petrology, geochemistry etc. They are carrying out research works in different branches of earth sciences.
The learning environment is characterized by close personal attention by faculty members to each and every student, and active teacher-student interactions in theoretical, laboratory and field classes.
The laboratories are equipped with requisite microscopes, topographic maps, geological maps a good collection of rock-forming minerals, ore minerals, igneous, metamorphic an sedimentary rocks, and fossils of different types.
Every year the students of this department score high marks in Calcutta University examinations, and more than 90% can pursue higher studies after graduation.
In the all-India entrance tests, our students secure high positions in the merit list and are admitted in the leading institutions of the country. This year also, more than 30% students of this department, competing with thousands of candidates, are placed in the first 10% merit positions in the all India joint entrance examinations.
