Department of Economics is an intellectual commons with the current students, current teachers, ex- students and ex-teachers.  Teaching Economics at the undergraduate Advance and General levels as per course curriculum of University of Calcutta, Economics faculty plays the significant role among the girl students in capacity building and budding the future generation Economists and policy makers.

Every year as a part of the Environmental Field Study the students of the Department of Economics conduct the socio economic survey under the supervision of departmental faculty.  By collecting primary data, interacting with the members of the households in household survey and analyzing the data, students get opportunity to link their theoretical knowledge in Economics and Statistics with the ground realities. In 2019-20 students under the supervision of the departmental faculty collected environmental economic data from the households dwelling on the bank of Adi Ganga (Tolly Nalla) in Garia, South Calcutta. They also collected ecological economic data from household survey in a tribal village in Nalbon1 under East Kolkata Wetland area. In these types of activities not only the students get exposed with the ground realities but also they get aware of their social responsibilities to bring the environmental awareness among the common people.
