The department of geography is one of the most prestigious departments in the Jogamaya Devi College. The geography department of Jogamaya Devi College is one of the leading departments in the sphere of Indian Geography since 1956.

The department of geography started journey with only 12 students and have expanded in proportion to the increasing demand for higher studies of women particularly in geography. The eminence of this department of geography has attracted students from far and wide.  This department is the breeding ground of future Geographers in India.

Students from places as far as north Bengal and neighbouring states have also opted to study in the geography department of this college. The number of student has increased remarkably in the 21^st century and at present Geography department possesses over 210 students during the academic session 2019-20.

At present, the department offers undergraduate course (BSc Honours and General) under the University of Calcutta. The department also acts as the study centre of post graduation course (MSc under the Vidyasagar University, Directorate of distance education).

The department is well equipped with surveying, weather instruments, good collection of topographical sheets and rocks and minerals. In addition, the department has separate GIS Lab. The department also boasts of seminar library with rich collection of reference books.

Eminent faculty members

The department has been benefited by a number of eminent teachers like Dr. Sudhin Kumar Mukherjee, Dr. Sibaram Bhattacharya, Dr. Bireshwar Banerjee to name a few, who have greatly inspired the students through their excellent tutelage and experience.

During the later phase of teaching, Dr. Sudhin kumar Mukherjee, Dr. Sibaram bhattacharya, Dr. Bireshwar Banerjee enlightened the department of geography in the University of Calcutta, Dr. Nikhil Krishna Dey enlightened the Burdwan University. Dr. Subhamita Chaudhury is now serving the Department of Geography in the West Bengal state university (Barasat) after serving this department.  Dr. Bireshwar Banerjee was the first professor, awarded D.Litt. in geography in the University of Calcutta.
